Anticoagulant medicines help prevent coagulation of the blood—the ability of the blood to clot. Blood clots can be beneficial because clots can help block the flow of blood into internal organs or out of the body if there is an 
injury. Blood clots, however, can also be dangerous when they form in blood vessels. In these cases, blood clots can block the flow of circulation, which can cause a heart attack or stroke.
There are a variety of anticoagulant medicines on the market today to help the body prevent these harmful blood clots. One of the newest anticoagulants on the market is Xarelto.
What is Xarelto?
Xarelto, manufactured by Bayer, is a drug marketed to help users reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation. Xarelto is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and used to reduce the risk of forming a blood clot in the legs and lungs for knee or hip replacement patients.
Despite its only recent approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, sales of Xarelto have generated about $1 billion in revenue.

Side Effects Caused by Xarelto
Users of the drug Xarelto should be cognizant that the drug may cause serious side effects. Common side effects from the use of Xarelto include the following health concerns:
Serious side effects include:
- Numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness;
- Easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or any bleeding that will not stop;
- Bloody stools;
- Dizziness;
- Increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding;
- Red or dark brown urine;
- Trouble breathing or swallowing;
- Vomiting blood;
- Stroke;
- Pain, swelling, or new drainage at wound sites; and
- Unusual bleeding from the gums.
Other less serious side effects:
- Itching;
- Arm, leg, or other muscle pain;
- Headache;
- Nosebleed;
- Increased likelihood to bruise; and
- Prolonged bleeding.
Complaints Against Xarelto
Recently, the Xarelto drug has come under criticism because it has not been able to control bleeding. Instead, new studies have shown that the drug may actually make bleeding worse.
Users of Xarelto have recently filed lawsuits against the drug maker for injuries linked to Xarelto, including intestinal bleeding, hemorrhaging, and even death. These lawsuits claim that the drug company has misled the public with respect to the marketing and advertising of Xarelto. Specifically, the company has been criticized for failing to inform doctors about possible uncontrolled bleeding with the drug and failing to advise doctors on how to properly control bleeding if it occurs.
